I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing creative writing pieces (I’m actually a big fan of narrative journalism Reader’s Digest), and have experience writing across various domains such as social media, journalism, public relations, academia and (a little bit of) fiction. 🙂
(Aug 2024 update: This semester, I am taking a Risk and Crisis Communications course about how large organisations such as governments and businesses can manage risk communication in traditional and new media landscapes. It’s quite exciting!
I am also exploring Search Engine Optimisation as part of my graduation project (where my group is helping our client revamp their website). Looking forward to adding more to this page soon!)
Coursework
I have taken a few courses on public relations, journalistic and academic writing in university thus far. 🙂 Here are some of my writing pieces and assignments, feel free to read through them:
NM4228: Risk & Crisis Communication (Aug 2024)
This module touches on how large organisations such as governments and businesses can manage risk communication in traditional and new media landscapes. It has a strong focus on health, environmental and social risks, and covers various risk and crisis perception theories such as the Social Amplification of Risk Framework, Risk Information Avoidance Theory, Image Repair Theory and more.
- Assignment 1 – Drug Abuse Case Study: For this assignment, we were tasked to put together a case study on a chosen risk using psychological and sociological frameworks. I chose the risk issue of drug abuse in Singapore, and used the Social Amplification of Risk Framework to analyse and unpack it.
NM3219: Writing for Communication Management (April 2024)
This module, also known as “Writing for Public Relations”, touched on various aspects of PR strategies and writing, such as the 4-step Public Relations process, writing for social media posts, media pitches, press releases, fact sheets and more.
- Press Release and Media Pitches: For this assignment, we were tasked to write a press release and 2 media pitches for Singapore Cancer Society’s 2024 World Cancer Day Celebration.
NM2220: Introduction to Media Writing (Nov 2023)
In this module, we were introduced to various forms of media writing, such as news writing, public relations writing and writing for advertising purposes.
- Original Feature News Story: For this assignment, we were tasked to produce a feature news story (including original photos and captions) for a student-run publication at NUS. I chose to interview and write my story about an NUS recreational electronics repair club. (Note: I have removed the original images for the privacy of the photo subjects)
UTW1001B: What is a Nation? (April 2022)
This was a foundational academic writing course exploring the construction of Singapore’s national identity through discourse and cultural studies frameworks.
- Critical Review: We were tasked to write a critique on an academic article on the Muslim Identity in Singapore.
- Active Ageing and the Singapore Elderly Identity: We also learnt how visual communication and persuasion theories are applied in developing Government-run campaigns, and were tasked to write an analytical essay on a regional state campaign. I chose to write my essay on active ageing campaigns in Singapore.
UTC1102G: Truth and Proof (Nov 2021)
This was a philosophy and reasoning module exploring how “truths” come to be through scientific reasoning, as well as the soft, subjective abstraction in the humanities.
- Truth and Proof in Mental Illness: For our final assignment, we were tasked to break down the logic structures and fallacies behind a topic of our choice. I chose mental illness, because I have always been a strong advocate for mental health, and wanted to challenge myself to explore another perspective.
Personal Projects
Original Short Story: Night Television (April 2022)
I once attended a short story writing workshop held by the NUS Literary Society. Short stories is one of my favourite literary genres! I built upon what I remembered from Literature lessons in school and the skills I learnt in the workshop to write a short story of my own, based on the theme of Generation Gap. I titled it “Night Television”, read it here.
Internships
social media copywriting, branding
Terrascope Marketing and Communications Internship (May – Aug 2023)
As I mentioned in my Social Media section, I was responsible for building up and executing Terrascope (a climate tech company)’s LinkedIn content strategy from scratch. I worked closely with the sustainability and product teams, as well as an external agency, to strategise and create content to grow Terrascope’s brand presence.
I handled most of the copywriting and strategisation myself, while the agency handled graphic design and the creation of marketing collaterals.
Here are some cool LinkedIn posts I had the chance to work on (same links shared in my Social Media section):
- Terrascope’s Official Japan Launch
- Terrascope as a guest panelist at Openspace’s Credible Carbon Accounting Panel
- Climate Cafe Express Episode 1 (Climate Cafe Express is a thought leadership series the marketing team launched in collaboration with the Sustainability and Product teams)
- Terrascope 1-year anniversary video (I filmed and edited the accompanying video using Capcut for this post)
- Employee Spotlight (I kickstarted and oversaw Employee Spotlight, an interview series aiming to tell the personal stories of Terrascope employees)
Reflections: I actually found copywriting for this role rather challenging because firstly, I wasn’t familiar with Climatetech and struggled with its many technical terms, and secondly, Terrascope was a new brand without an established brand voice. It was also my first time marketing for a B2B product.
But I was ultimately able to find my rhythm through lots of reading up and more alignment meetings with my team 🙂 and managed to learn a lot about copywriting and branding.
REFASH Marketing Internship (Jan – May 2023)
In this internship, one of my biggest roles was to conceptualise and develop content marketing pieces for REFASH’s (a local thrift store and division of Carousell group) LinkedIn, the Company Blog, Lemon8 and occasionally Instagram. Here are some of the pieces I worked on:
- Blog Post: Online Shopping Guide for Dummies — REFASH Edition
- LinkedIn Post: REFASH and Geneco’s CNY Campaign
- LinkedIn Post: Upcycling Workshop Sign ups (includes the creation of.LinkedIn event)
- LinkedIn Post: Sustainability Nugget #1 (“Sustainability Nuggets” was an educational LinkedIn series I initiated, which aims to explain key developments and trivia in the sustainable retail scene)
- Lemon8: Flower-themed lookbook (I did both the copywriting and design work for this one)
Co-curricular Activities
social media copywriting
Tembusu College Communications Committee (Oct 2020 – Oct 2021)
(as mentioned under my Social Media section). As a member of the communications committee at Tembusu College (my university student residence), I conceptualised and created content for our student life Instagram and Telegram channels to build community engagement and spirit. I was mainly in charge of content planning and copywriting, and occasionally created visuals with Canva and Photoshop as well. Here are some of the visuals and captions I worked on:
